President Trump just infuriated former First Lady Michelle Obama by rescinding one of her archaic school lunch rules that was hated by kids and school administrators alike.
One of Michelle’s most focused on issues was healthy eating for school children. Instead of trying to find meals that were both nutritious and appealing to children, she implemented draconian rules to force children to eat “nutritious food.”
The outcome of that was that children no longer ate the school lunch food and would bring their own from home. The Trump administration seeks to stop that and get kids eating school lunch again.
The new rule will relax the whole-grain requirements and sodium limits imposed by Obama. It will also allow one-percent fat milk, including chocolate milk, back on the menu.
“Schools need flexibility in menu planning so they can serve nutritious and appealing meals,” Said Agricultural Secretary Sonny Perdue this week. “Schools want to offer food that students actually want to eat. It doesn’t do any good to serve nutritious meals if they wind up in the trash can.”
One thing that infuriated Obama the most about the relaxation of the rules was the decision to bring back chocolate milk, an obvious favorite among school children.
“I wouldn’t be as big as I am today without flavored milk.”
Another downside of the Obama rules was that because the food didn’t taste as appealing, many children were just plain not eating it, leading to a lot of food waste.
“If kids aren’t eating the food, and it’s ending up in the trash, they aren’t getting any nutrition — thus undermining the intent of the program.”
Besides adding to food waste, the Obama rules also led to an increase in the price of food for schools across the country. Many of these schools were already struggling financially and this put an extra burden on them.
